Agra
Popularly known as the ‘Taj City’, Agra is an integral part of India’s alluring Golden Triangle tourist circuit. More than 7 million tourists flock to this charming city every year due to its outstanding historical attractions, most especially the Taj Mahal. Originally called ‘Crown of Palaces’, this monument was built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in honor of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. In the current age, this construction has evolved into a narrative history of love and advanced methods of construction, which leaves no traveler unappreciative of the monument.
The wonder of Agra goes beyond the Taj Mahal in terms of historical sites. The massive Agra Fort, more commonly known as the Red Fort due to its broad reddish sandstone walls, displays the might and beauty of the Mughal Empire. Designed in the shape of a boat’s crescent moon and built with high walls, it delivers a glimpse from inside and reveals the royal history of India, with palaces, audience halls, and gardens neatly arranged inside.
Not too far from the city of Agra lies yet another World Heritage Site, Fatehpur Sikri. It was a capital city built by Akbar with much detailing as a site for recreation devoid of all the regal activities of a ruler. Even though constructed and used for a very short time, it still evokes period charm due to its large courtyards, palaces, and mosques active in showcasing the life history of the Mughal Empire.
From astonishingly recognizable sites to hidden gems within the busy and turbulent streets and markets, Agra has a treasure of history and culture. For anyone who has an interest in the historical aspect of India, Agra guarantees a wonderful experience through its architectural masterpieces.
